Living Alone in Singapore: What the Numbers Show
In 2025, 88,400 Singapore residents aged 65 and over lived in one-person households — 11.5% of all seniors. A decade earlier the figure was 42,100. The number of older Singaporeans living on their own has more than doubled in ten years, and the population it is drawn from is growing at the same time.

The number has more than doubled in a decade
Singapore's Department of Statistics publishes living arrangements for residents aged 65 and over. In 2025, 88,400 of them lived alone, out of 768,800 residents in that age group — 11.5%. In 2024 the figure was 87,200, and in 2014 it was 42,100.
Two trends compound here. The share of Singapore residents aged 65 and over reached 18.8% in 2025, up from 18.0% in 2024 and 11.8% in 2015 — so the pool is growing quickly. And within that pool, the proportion living alone has risen. The result is that the absolute number of older Singaporeans without anyone else in the home has grown faster than the ageing of the population alone would explain.
A note on vintages, because Singapore mixes two collection methods: figures for 2010 and 2020 come from the Census of Population, while 2015 and 2025 come from the General Household Survey. Comparing a census year directly against a survey year is not like-for-like, and this page keeps each figure labelled with its year.

What Singapore already provides
Singapore does more than most countries here, and it would be misleading to write about household safety without saying so. The Housing & Development Board operates an Elderly Monitoring System — a sensor-based, in-flat system that detects unusual inactivity and escalates to a responder — installed in eligible flats. The Ministry of Health's Action Plan for Successful Ageing sets the national ageing-in-place framing, and the Agency for Integrated Care coordinates community support. MOH has separately addressed loneliness and psychological distress among seniors living alone as a policy question in its own right.
This is a genuinely good public system, and we are not a substitute for it. HDB's system is fitted, in a specific flat, for people who qualify. What it does not do is travel with you: it cannot tell anyone you are in trouble at a hawker centre, on the MRT, or visiting your daughter in Punggol. An app is the other shape of the same idea — nothing to install, nothing to qualify for, and it works wherever you are.
Living alone safely in Singapore
The practical picture in Singapore is specific. Most people live in high-rise flats where a neighbour may be a metre away through a wall and still have no idea anything is wrong. Corridors are shared but transient. Many older residents live alone by choice, near family rather than with them — which is a good arrangement right up until the day something goes wrong and nobody is scheduled to notice.
The emergency number in Singapore is 995 for ambulance and fire, and 999 for police. A check-in app does not call either, and does not pretend to. What it does is make sure that if you don't confirm you're okay, the people you chose find out quickly — the neighbour on your floor, your son in Tampines, your sister overseas.
I'm Alive is a daily check-in app. You confirm you're okay once a day; if you don't, the people you chose are told, with your location. The daily check-in is free (Try It, $0) and works on iPhone and Android anywhere in the world. Automatic alerts to your contacts start on Protect Me ($29.99/year), with location on the move on Protect Me On The Move ($39.99/year); there is a one-time Stay Connected lifetime upgrade at $4.99. Check-first phone fall detection is live on iPhone only (app v2.3.1) on Protect Me and above, and stays off until you switch it on. It alerts your own trusted contacts — it never calls emergency services, and it is best-effort, not a medical device. The app interface is currently in English only.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many seniors live alone in Singapore?
88,400 residents aged 65 and over lived in one-person households in 2025 — 11.5% of the 768,800 residents in that age group, according to the Department of Statistics' General Household Survey.
Is that number growing?
Yes, quickly. It was 87,200 in 2024 and 42,100 in 2014 — more than double in a decade. The share of residents aged 65 and over also rose to 18.8% in 2025, from 11.8% in 2015.
What is the HDB Elderly Monitoring System?
A sensor-based system fitted inside eligible HDB flats that detects unusual inactivity and escalates to a responder. It is a well-regarded public programme. Its limits are that it is fitted to a specific flat and requires eligibility — it does not travel with you outside the home.
Do I need to buy any hardware?
No. I'm Alive runs on the phone you already have, on iPhone or Android. There is nothing to install in your flat and nothing to wear.
Does the app call 995?
No. It alerts the trusted contacts you chose, with your location — it never calls emergency services, and it is not connected to a monitoring call centre. If you need an ambulance, call 995.
Is it free?
The daily check-in is free (Try It, $0). Automatic alerts to your contacts when you miss a check-in start on Protect Me ($29.99/year). There is also a one-time Stay Connected lifetime upgrade at $4.99, and Protect Me On The Move at $39.99/year for location on the move.
