Frequently Asked Questions

Isn't calling better than an app?

Calls are better for connection. Check-ins are better for consistent safety confirmation. They serve different purposes.

How can I check on my parent without calling every day?

Agree on a daily check-in. Your parent taps once a day at a time they choose. If they miss it, they get a reminder, and then you're alerted (every time on Protect Me, by text, email and app notification). You stop calling to find out whether they're okay, and your calls can be about everything else.

We try to call daily but often miss.

That's exactly where a check-in helps. On the days the call doesn't happen, you still hear if they haven't checked in.

What should I do if my parent doesn't answer the phone?

Don't panic on the first unanswered call: try again, send a text, and check whether they mentioned plans. If you still can't reach them, call a neighbour or a relative nearby who can knock on the door. If nobody can reach them and you're worried, call the local police non-emergency line and ask for a welfare check, or the emergency number if you believe they're in danger. A daily check-in gives you an earlier, clearer signal than a missed call.

Are there free daily call services?

Yes, in many places. Local councils, charities and agencies on aging run telephone reassurance calls, for example Red Cross Telecross in Australia. They're a good option if your parent would enjoy a daily call from a person. A check-in app suits parents who'd rather tap once at their own time and have their own family alerted.

Will this replace our phone calls?

No, and it shouldn't. Keep calling for time together. Use the check-in for daily reassurance.

My parent prefers calls.

Great—keep calling. Add the check-in as a backup for the days the call doesn't happen.

What if I live in a different time zone from my parent?

Time zones make daily calls hard: you may only have a narrow window when you're both awake and free. A check-in is asynchronous, so your parent confirms at their own morning time, and you're alerted wherever you are if they don't.

Is a check-in app hard for an older parent to use?

It's one tap a day. On iPhone your parent can also check in from a home-screen widget or by saying "Hey Siri, I'm OK". The app is in English and works on iPhone and Android.

How do we choose a check-in time?

Pick a moment that's already part of your parent's routine, like after breakfast or after the morning news. If they miss it, they get a reminder before anyone is alerted, so a slow morning isn't a problem. Protect Me allows up to two check-in times a day.

Can a neighbour be told too?

Yes. Your parent can add anyone as a contact: you, your siblings, a neighbour with a key, a friend in the same street. Protect Me allows up to 10 contacts, and they don't need the app. Someone nearby who can knock on the door is often the most useful contact of all.

Can we test it before relying on it?

Yes. Send a clearly marked test alert from the app and check that each contact received it. Do it once at setup, and again whenever you change a contact.

Does my parent have to remember to check in?

Not on their own. When their check-in time comes, the app reminds them, and it reminds them again before anyone is alerted. On iPhone they can tap a home-screen widget or say "Hey Siri, I'm OK", and they can choose to let opening the app count as the check-in.
