Does this track my location?
Your daily check-in doesn't share where you are. Live location sharing is a separate feature on Protect Me On The Move, for trips.
What happens if I miss a check-in?
You get a reminder first. If you still don't check in, the people you chose are alerted: on Protect Me every time, by text, email and app notification; on the free version, one contact, once a month.
Can I have a friend as my emergency contact instead of family?
Yes. Choose anyone you trust: a roommate, a friend, a partner, a neighbour or family. Protect Me allows up to 10 contacts, and they don't need the app.
What if I'm traveling for work?
The app works wherever your phone has signal. Adjust your check-in time if you need to, or pause check-ins for a trip. Protect Me On The Move adds up to three check-in times a day, live location sharing and Follow Me for trips.
Can I check in without opening the app?
On iPhone you can check in from a home-screen widget or by saying "Hey Siri, I'm OK". You can also choose to let opening the app count as your check-in.
Is my data private?
Our privacy policy sets out exactly what we collect and why. The daily check-in itself doesn't share your location.
How much does it cost?
The daily check-in is free in the app, with one contact and one missed check-in alert a month. Protect Me is $29.99 a year for an alert every time, text messages and up to 10 contacts.
Is it an emergency service?
No. I'm Alive alerts the people you choose. It is not an emergency service, and it doesn't call 911, 999 or 000. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
I just moved to a new city for my first job. My parents call constantly. Will this reduce the calls?
That is one of the most common reasons women download the app. Once your parents know they'll hear if you miss a check-in, many find they don't need to call to check. You get your space; they get their peace of mind.
Can I pause it when I'm away or have people staying?
Yes. Turn on pause (vacation mode) for as long as you need, and turn it back off when you're home or on your own again.
How do I know the alerts actually work?
Send a clearly marked test alert from the app and check that your contacts received it. Do it once when you set up, and again whenever you change a contact.
Can I set more than one check-in a day?
Yes. Protect Me allows up to two check-in times a day, and Protect Me On The Move up to three, which helps if you work late shifts or travel. Your contacts hear when you miss one, not every time you check in.
