Lone Worker Check-In Apps: What They Do, Who Needs One, and What They Can't Do
A lone worker check-in app confirms you're okay on a schedule and tells someone when you don't. What HSE and WHS require, and how enterprise kit differs.
What a lone worker check-in app actually does
The mechanism is deliberately simple. You confirm you are okay — once a day, at the end of a shift, or on a timer you set before a job. If the confirmation arrives, nothing happens. If it does not, the people you nominated are told, and they can act.
That is the whole of it, and the simplicity is the point. A check-in does not prevent a fall from a ladder, defuse an aggressive customer, or make a rural road safer. It addresses a narrower and very specific failure: the hours or days that can pass between something going wrong and anybody realising it has. For someone who works alone, that gap is often the difference between a bad afternoon and a much worse outcome, and it is the one part of lone-working risk that a phone can genuinely close.
It is worth being precise about the claim, because this market is full of vendors who are not. A check-in app shortens the time before someone notices. It does not shorten the emergency.
Who counts as a lone worker — the regulator's definition, not a marketing one
Britain's Health and Safety Executive defines a lone worker as "someone who works by themselves without close or direct supervision," and its guidance Protecting lone workers (INDG73, revision 4, published 2020) is unusually concrete about who that covers. Its own list includes people who work alone at a fixed base such as shops, petrol stations, factories, warehouses or leisure centres; people who work separately from others on the same premises or outside normal hours, such as security staff, cleaners, and maintenance and repair staff; people who work at home; and people who work away from a fixed base — health, medical and social care workers visiting people's homes, construction and maintenance engineers, postal staff, taxi drivers, estate agents, sales and service representatives visiting domestic and commercial premises, HGV drivers, van and bike couriers, and agricultural and forestry workers.
HSE also notes explicitly that the gig economy has expanded this population: on-demand work obtained through an online platform and delivered task by task, performed by people who are "usually independent contractors, freelancers or self-employed" and who are "many" of them lone workers exposed to specific road risks.
Read against that list, the people who search for a lone worker check-in app are exactly the people the regulator has in mind: the night-shift attendant, the community nurse on an evening visit, the security officer on a quiet site, the cleaner in an empty office at 5am, the field engineer at a remote installation, the estate agent showing an empty property to a stranger they met online, and the farmer working a distant field alone.
What the law actually requires — and who it requires it of
This is where most vendor pages become vague, so here is the specific position in two jurisdictions.
Great Britain. HSE's guidance sits under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations. There is no legal requirement to conduct a separate risk assessment specifically for lone workers, but employers do have a duty to include risks to lone workers in their general risk assessment. On keeping in touch, HSE's stated options include supervisors periodically visiting and observing people working alone; "pre-agreed intervals of regular contact between the lone worker and employer, using phones, radios, email etc"; devices designed to raise the alarm in an emergency, operated manually or automatically; and — the one that maps most directly onto a check-in — "implementing a robust system to ensure a lone worker has returned to their base or home once their work is completed." HSE adds that these technical solutions and emergency procedures should be tested regularly.
Australia. The model Work Health and Safety Regulations (regulation 48) require a person conducting a business or undertaking to manage the risks associated with remote or isolated work, including by providing effective communication with the worker. Safe Work Australia defines remote or isolated work as work isolated from the assistance of others because of location, time, or the nature of the work — which means a night shift in a city can meet the definition just as a paddock can.
Note who those duties fall on: employers. If you are classified as a self-employed contractor, HSE says plainly that health and safety law may not apply to you in the same way and directs you to check your own position. That is not a technicality — it is the reason a large number of couriers, drivers and freelance tradespeople end up buying their own check-in rather than being issued one.
The risk data, briefly and without dramatics
Two figures are worth carrying, both from primary agency releases.
In Great Britain, HSE recorded 126 workers killed in work-related accidents in 2025/26 (provisional) — the lowest single-year figure outside the pandemic-affected years. Around a third of those deaths were to self-employed workers, who make up around 15% of the workforce; across 2021/22–2025/26 HSE puts the fatal injury rate for the self-employed at around three times the employee rate, and higher than the employee rate across all the main industry sectors.
In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded 5,070 fatal work injuries in 2024, down 4.0% from 5,283 in 2023, at a rate of 3.3 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers. Transportation incidents remained the most frequent fatal event at 1,937 deaths, 38.2% of the total.
HSE's list of key workplace violence risks is the other piece worth knowing, because it describes lone-working exposure precisely: working in locations with a known high risk of violence; late evening or early morning work when there are fewer workers around; holding a position of authority over customers, as security staff do; alcohol and drug use among members of the public the worker deals with; and carrying money or valuable equipment. HSE's own conclusion is measured and worth repeating: lone working does not automatically imply a higher risk of violence, but it does make workers more vulnerable, because the lack of nearby support means they may be less able to prevent an incident from occurring.

Enterprise lone-worker systems versus a consumer check-in app
These are two different products that share a word, and buying the wrong one is a real and expensive mistake in both directions.
An enterprise lone worker safety system is bought by an employer to discharge a duty. It typically includes a dedicated device or a managed app, a panic alarm, man-down or no-motion detection, an alarm receiving centre staffed around the clock that will call emergency services on the worker's behalf, contractual escalation procedures, per-seat licensing, administrative dashboards, and audit trails that survive an inspection. In Britain, buyers usually look for conformity with BS 8484, the standard for lone worker device services, because that is what allows a monitoring centre to obtain a police response. If you are an employer with a legal duty, that is the category you are shopping in, and no consumer app is a substitute for it.
A consumer check-in app is bought by an individual. It does the noticing and nothing else: you confirm you are okay, and if you do not, the people you chose are told. There is no monitoring centre, no contracted response, no certification, and no audit trail an inspector would accept. What it has instead is that it costs a fraction as much, needs no procurement, no hardware and no employer's permission, and is available to the very large group of people — contractors, freelancers, sole traders, gig workers — whom nobody is going to issue a device to.

What to look for when you're choosing one
Six questions separate a tool that will actually work from one that will sit unused.
1. Who gets told, and how? An alert that goes only to an app notification on a phone that is asleep is not an alert. Ask whether contacts are reached by SMS as well as push, whether more than one contact can be notified, and in what order.
2. Does it fit your shift, not a nine-to-five? If you finish at 4am, a fixed 9am check-in window means you either miss it every rest day or set it so late it is useless. Look for check-in windows you can move, and reminders that follow you across time zones if you travel.
3. Does it need anything you won't carry? Hardware you have to charge separately, wear visibly, or remember is hardware you will eventually leave at home. Something that runs on the phone already in your pocket has a much higher chance of being live when it matters.
4. What does it do about location? Continuous tracking is not the same as sending a location when an alert fires, and for many workers the second is acceptable while the first is not. Check which one you are buying and who can see it.
5. Does it claim things it cannot do? "Automatically calls emergency services" and "24/7 monitoring" are specific claims with specific infrastructure behind them. If a consumer-priced app makes them, ask which alarm receiving centre, and under what standard.
6. Will you actually use it every day? The most sophisticated system in the category is worthless at zero adoption. One tap has an unglamorous but decisive advantage over a five-step workflow.

How the different lone-working jobs actually use it
The pattern differs by trade, and it is worth setting up for the shape of your work rather than the default.
Night-shift and early-morning workers — attendants, cleaners, warehouse staff — get the most out of a check-in window placed after they would normally be home and asleep, with a note carrying the current pattern ("nights this week, home by 5"). Home-care and community nurses visit strangers' homes alone, often in the evening, and are among the groups HSE names directly. The useful pattern is an end-of-round confirmation rather than a per-visit one, so the routine survives a busy day.
Security and cleaning staff work in empty buildings outside normal hours — HSE's stated risk profile almost exactly. A shift-end check-in with a named colleague or family member as contact is the low-friction version.
Field engineers and remote technicians travel to sites where nobody expects them at a fixed time. A timer started before the drive out, stopped on safe return, is the mechanism that fits the work.
Estate and real-estate agents doing solo viewings meet unvetted members of the public in empty properties. Many agencies already run a buddy system for this; a check-in is the version that works when the office has gone home.
Farmers and agricultural workers are, on HSE's own rate data, in the highest-risk sector in Britain, frequently working distant fields alone with intermittent signal. A daily confirmation with a household member is often the only realistic notice mechanism.
