SMS Safety Alerts — How Consent Works
I'm Alive only sends SMS to an emergency contact after that contact has agreed to receive them. No one is texted without giving consent first. Here is exactly how it works.
The opt-in flow
- 1
A user adds you as their safety contact
Inside the I'm Alive app, a person who lives alone adds you (name, mobile number and email) as someone to notify if they ever miss a daily safety check-in. They confirm they have your permission to add you.
- 2
We email you to ask for consent
Before any text is ever sent, we email you to explain that you've been added as a safety contact and ask whether you agree to receive SMS safety alerts. The email links to a secure page with two buttons: “Yes, I consent” and “No thanks.”
- 3
You decide
If you tap “Yes, I consent,” we record your consent (with a timestamp) and you'll receive SMS alerts. If you decline — or simply don't respond — we never send you any SMS. You stay reachable by email only, or not at all, exactly as you choose.
- 4
You only ever hear from us about safety
If you consented, you receive a text only when the person you're a contact for misses their daily check-in. There is no marketing, no promotions — only safety alerts about the person who added you.
- 5
You can opt out anytime
Every message includes “Reply STOP to opt out.” Reply STOP and you'll immediately stop receiving texts. Reply HELP for help.
What the messages look like
Message frequency varies by missed check-ins. Message and data rates may apply.
Your privacy
- We never sell or share your phone number. It is used only to send safety alerts about the person who added you.
- You receive SMS only if you explicitly consent, and only about missed check-ins.
- You can withdraw consent at any time by replying STOP.
- See our Privacy Policy and how contacts are notified for full detail.
